Although I have no doubt that the Cyclex is capable of capturing a
reasonably accurate snapshot of the air in an area, the lab perspective is
grim. First of all, most Cyclex users are pulling about 200 liters of air.
This would seem to be an improvement over impactors that are only
pulling 25-150 liters, right? No. In fact, pulling that much air typically
overloads the Cyclex with so much debris that spores are obscured and
can be missed. Also, the Cyclex has one of the largest areas of
deposition, meaning that not only is it loaded with a whole bunch of debris,
but it's spread over such a huge area of deposition, that it will take the lab
twice as long to read as most other cassettes, and the CV or
reproducibility is lousy. I hate seeing these come into the lab, as I know
they are going to take forever to read, and are going to be difficult to read
as well. If you're not concerned about whether the lab likes it or not,
that's fine, but you're potentially sacrificing reprocucibility as a result.
